Ken graduated from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography. He worked briefly as an International Fisheries Observer with the Department of Fisheries.  Inspired with the desire to command a naval ship, he promptly enrolled in the Canadian Forces in 1977.   Ken served thirty-five years to the Royal Canadian Navy.  His tours of duty included many complex and challenging operational assignments both at home and abroad.  He has commanded at sea and ashore in several  key appointments and was recognized for his outstanding leadership and resource management skills.   Captain Hoffer retired from the RCN in September 2012.  He presently volunteers his time to champion veterans’ issues through the RUSI NS Veterans Affairs Committee and in his role as President of the Society of Atlantic Heroes – an organization which will help establish future Transition Support Center(s) of Excellence to assist military and RCMP veterans as well as civilian first responders who are facing significant personal challenges as a result of occupational stress injuries.
