Kathleen O’Brien was born into a family of servicemen, with grandfathers in both the Canadian Navy and Halifax Regional Fire Department and father in the RCMP. Born in Saskatoon, SK, she lived in several communities in the province before moving to the Northwest Territories. While completing high school in Yellowknife, Kathleen was selected to represent Canadian Youth at the 55th Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice. 
Kathleen completed her undergraduate degree at St. Mary’s University in Halifax, where she majored with honors in Political Science and was a four-time Academic All Canadian member of the varsity women’s Hockey team. She volunteers at various organizations in Halifax including the Halifax International Security Organization, the Romeo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative and is a volunteer minor hockey coach. 
She is pursuing a Masters Degree in Political Science at Dalhousie University, where her thesis focuses on developing a new policy framework for evaluating the mental healthcare administration in the Canadian Forces. For her research, Kathleen was selected as the 2015 Women in Defence and Security Scholar.
